Obviously your photographer needs to know what they are doing technically. That part matters. You want someone who can handle light, movement, weather, timelines, dark venues, chaotic dancefloors, and all the rest of it.

But weddings are not created in a vacuum. They happen around people, emotions, nerves, family dynamics, shifting plans, and the occasional mildly off-kilter schedule. So being good with people is not some bonus extra. It is a massive part of the job.

Knowing when to step in, when to back off, grabbing drinks or brandishing safety pins, how to keep things moving without being bossy (OK maybe a bit when group photos are happening), how to reassure someone without making a big thing of it, how to get the picture without killing the mood.

Wedding guests are one of the finest forms of live entertainment. I BLOODY love people watching, it’s a massive perk of the job….

Obviously I am there to photograph you, your day, your people, and all the big important moments. Very professional. Deeply committed to the job.
But I would be lying if I said wedding guest behaviour was not one of my favourite side quests.

There is always someone crying during the ceremony after swearing they would not, someone fixing everyone’s outfit like they work there, and at least one guest giving an unexpectedly committed dancefloor performance. There is also usually a relative quietly holding the whole social energy of the day together.
I love all of it.

Weddings are full of weird, brilliant little moments like that, and they are a huge part of what makes the day feel real. Yes, the big moments matter, but so does your mate losing it over the evening pizza and your aunt going for it when Proud Mary starts playing.

A good wedding timeline should make the day feel easier, not more structured for the sake of it - it’s not about being rigid or a newlywedzilla

I think some couples hear the word “timeline” and immediately picture a joyless spreadsheet, somebody clapping their hands, and the whole day being run like a school trip.

A good timeline is not there to control your day. It is there to give it breathing room. It’s to help your suppliers help you and keep things moving so you don’t need to think about anything. It helps stop everything feeling rushed, gives you space to actually enjoy what is happening, and makes it far more likely that your photos will feel relaxed rather than squeezed in between minor panic and someone asking where the confetti has gone. (Don’t worry I’m ALWAYS in charge of the confetti).

It also means you are less likely to lose chunks of the day to faff. You get time with your guests, time to eat, time to have a drink, time to disappear for ten minutes together without feeling like the whole thing is about to fall apart.

That is why I care about timings. Not because I want the day to feel over-managed, but because I want it to feel easier for you.

You can still be sarcastic. You can still be loud.

You can still be sarcastic. You can still be loud. You can still hate being the centre of attention a tiny bit. You can still want a proper party, proper music, and photos that look brilliant without making you feel like you have wandered into someone else’s Pinterest board.

I think that is the bit some people need reminding of. Wedding photography should meet you where you are, not ask you to become a completely different person for a day.

If you are stylish but a bit chaotic, sentimental but not soppy, cool but still very much up for a dancefloor meltdown by 10pm, there is absolutely room for that. In fact, I would argue it makes the whole thing much better. YOUR Day. YOUR People. YOUR Personailty. YOUR love story 🫶

The luxury is not the fluff. It’s how the day feels. Sometimes luxury looks like a wedding day that actually feels good to be in.

🖤 It looks like not being marched around for endless photos.
🖤 It looks like knowing someone competent is keeping an eye on the little things.
🖤 It looks like feeling looked after without feeling managed.
🖤 It looks like having photos that bring back the energy of the day, not just proof of what everyone wore.

A lot of couples want beautiful images, obviously. But the higher value part is not just the gallery. It is the full experience of having someone there who knows when to step in, when to back off, and how to keep things moving without making your wedding feel like content production.

That is the stuff that changes the day. And yes, it also happens to look great in photos.
